Synth Warmer is an analog synth filter emulation based on the iconic 1970s monosynth ladder filter design, complete with overload distortion and self oscillation. Use to warm up your rude supersaws, add interest to drum loops, or create total sonic havoc as a sound design tool.
Limit is a transparent limiter with intelligent look-ahead in the range 0 to 30 milliseconds that reduces distortion to a minimum. The limiting is performed in a two step process with a pre-compressor follower by the actual peak limiting algorithm. You can use up to 4 times oversampling for true peak limiting and to further reduce distortion. With version 1.1, the pre-compressor has a new auto-release mode that adapts the release time to the audio material.

With 6 modes of Distortion A (Triode) and another 6 modes of Distortion B (Pentode), this plugin can give you many different colors and flavors of distortion from soft and warm to edgy and crunchy. Push this plugin and it will bite back! Further shape your sound with The Varislope Equalizer Section of the Plugin.
Audio Damage has announced the release of Grind, a new plug-in described as "a true powerhouse of audio warfare, Grind puts the "damage" in Audio Damage". From subtle tube-style saturation to full-on mangled wavetable distortion, AD says Grind is a Swiss Army Knife of sound design.
Grind consists of three main blocks: wavetable lookup, in to algorithmic saturation/distortion/, and finally to a multi-mode filter. The wavetable module uses the amplitude of the incoming signal to replace the sample with one from 15 different linearly-interpolated wavetables, chosen for their mangling potential. Window size and phase controls provide further tone-shaping possibilities.
Speakers features a freely configurable effects chain, comprising compression, distortion, and filtering, as well as an array of looping background noises for setting the sound in a variety of environments.
Temper is a modern digital distortion plugin featuring a rich saturation stage and a unique phase distortion. Use the variable saturation curve to add warmth and edge to your sound, and let the phase distortion bring character and clarity through your mix. Temper also features a simple resonant lowpass filter and a feedback path to drive the intensity of the tone.
There are two independent distortion engines in Dist Coldfire, and you can use them in whatever combination you like. A variety of pre-and post-distortion filters are available for each distortion type. Analog-modeled and purely digital distortion types are both available.
Because it was conceived, built, and fine-tuned by Grammy-winning engineers, Spicerack radically rethinks how often audio saturation and distortion are accomplished. There are five distinct types of harmonic distortion available in Spicerack, each of which can be used to saturate further, distort, shape, or texturize your audio.
With various built-in effects, Thermal goes way beyond simple distortion. The plugin has loads of presets that it automatically offers you based on the input material. All sounds are controllable through the circular XY graph that balances whatever effects are assigned to the two knobs on the right-hand side of the GUI.
This plugin lets you split the audio into three bands and add different LFOs for each band. You can draw the oscillations with unlimited points in the graph and add to each LFO a different distortion style. All this makes DriveShaper the utility belt of distortion plugins.
The plugin offers multi-band distortion with a two-stage approach so that you can add two different distortions per band. You can use the waveshaper to fine-tune the distortion or create entirely new sounds. Additionally, the plugin offers two effects, two filters, and two modulation options.
The plugin offers several distortion modes which can be used softly or taken to extremes. For example, the Subtle modes all sound amazingly transparent and can even be added to a mastering chain for coloration. The more overdriven textures will sound astonishing on any instrument. Overall, the plugin sounds clean and precise, without the addition of the common unwanted distortion artifacts.
However you want your distortion, Kombinat Tri can help you achieve it. Underneath the simple interface, the plugin offers a vast sonic landscape. All you have to do is mix and match the algorithms and tackle the parameters. Additionally, the crossover points are precise to the point of fully isolating bands.
You can add subtle or in-your-face distortion with this plugin. That makes it great for adding just a little bit of color and presence to a snare track or bring punch and heaviness to a guitar solo. The plugin lets you control several parameters at once using the Ribbon control. Additionally, the three-band EQ with sweepable mids gives you precise sonic shaping for your distortion.
The various parameters let you thoroughly crush your input signal and turn simple, clean-sounding instruments into growly noises. Alternatively, you can add warm glue to the sound by applying just the necessary amount of drive to make instruments come alive. The Gate also adds nicely to the effect chain by giving you the ability to cut out the unwanted noises caused in between notes by excessive distortion.
The plugin lets you add distortion in nine different ways and extensively filter the signal. The Dynamics Flattener works as a user-friendly compressor, while the Diode Clipper gives this plugin its status as one of the best distortion plugins.
If you were looking for a go-to free distortion, this is it. The HY-MBDrive is a reliable plugin that offers great-sounding results. Add it to your collection and make your tracks growl at just the right amount.
Tantrum allows you to shape your distortion to taste with its precise set of controls. You can go from mild to powerful distortion using some excellent emulations like tube and tape curves. Overall the plugin sounds very artifact-free, and as you load it into the signal chain, it starts modulating your sound, even if just a little.
The plugin has two menus, one for distortion and another for movement. You get to choose the algorithm you want to use at the distortion stage, the input, drive, and output levels, and the filtering. You can both high- and low-pass the sound to focus the distortion only on the mids or specific frequency regions.
The plugin lets you route and modulate any parameter of the fifteen effect processors. It gives you a multimode filter, a metalizer, a digitizer, an FM ring modulator, and a multimode distortion. Each effect has three adjustable channels, and thanks to the multimode filter, the plugin can be used as a multi-band effects processor.
The four modes in SDRR:The TUBE mode consists of two different models of a two stage tube preamplifier. These two models can be blended into each other with the CHARACTER control. WARM focusses more on the transient smoothing and compressing character associated with tubes, while SIZZLE captures the harmonics generated, when driving the preamp without affecting the transients much. The DIGI mode: designed to precisely add even and/or odd harmonics to program material. Gives a very controlled sound. Again two models were created, which can be blended. The first one only generated the first 4 harmonics. DIGI is great for adding harmonics and excitement to your tracks without coloring the signal too much and might act as a proof, that digital saturation can sound pleasant. Use the BIT->RATE control for bit crushing/sample rate reduction effects. Combined with the DRIFT parameter it can get pretty wild! The FUZZ mode: consists of two different models of classic germanium fuzz stomp boxes. Both are heavily modified for lower distortion levels to be suited even for mastering duties. The FUZZ mode takes advantage of the unique properties of germanium transistors and delivers a very warm, cosy sound. THE DESK mode: Klanghelm's version of a flexible mixing desk channel strip plugin with just a few controls. It features a sophisticated 2 band EQ with special designed curves to fit most material. Furthermore it offers control over the transient response of the saturation and the compression. The aim of the DESK mode is to be the only plugin needed for an at least OK recorded track to shine - all with very few controls.
Saturn 2 is a pro-grade distortion and saturation plugin with a fantastic interface and workflow for multi-band saturation, allowing you to apply broad strokes or get very detailed and clinical with equal ease when applying warmth and distortion to the parts and frequencies of your sounds that need it while avoiding the rest.
In between that feature and the simple mix knob, you have a whole bunch of options for how, and to what degree, you process your sounds. The latest update, Saturn 2, saw the interface get a welcome refresh and improved modulation visualisation, new subtle saturation and linear phase processing for mastering, and a range of additional distortion types in the processing Style menu. Recommended!
Like Decapitator above, it also features five different distortion models to choose from, but unlike that plugin Harmonics covers a broader (and less model-specific) range of saturation source types: Solid State, Transformer, Master, Tube and Modern.
Also definitely check out two other D16 plugins for alternate flavours of distortion-type processing: Decimort 2 is my personal favourite for bit-crushing, and the multiband distortion unit Devastator 2 is particularly good for harder and industrial techno styles, amongst other uses. 2ff7e9595c
